Killing the Pain of 2016

It was a brutally bad year, no matter what your tastes in entertainment or politics happen to be. If you can't undo the damage, at least you can make it more palatable on New Year's before trudging back to work.

Need Holiday Reading?

The memoir is available for Kindle and Kindle app or in trade paperback!

The Flame Broiled Doctor is a retrospective on my all too short days as a practicing doctor. Literally 20 years in the making, it tells my journeyman's tale in medicine, from the day of my fluke acceptance into med school through the day I threw in the towel from burnout. It's a collection of all my best stories, some heartwarming, some heartbreaking, and some laugh-out-loud revolting. Medicine, (genital) warts and all.

More than the stories, though, the book is a window into modern medicine through the eyes of an ordinary Family Doctor. There are no race-against-time heroics, no game-changing breakthrough discoveries...it's medicine as it is, the encounters between doctor and patient.

The book is also the most personal account I can give of life as a doctor, including my own experiences with chronic pain, severe burnout, and taking a turn in the patient's chair. Disease takes its toll on the patient, but also leaves wounds in the lives and families of those tasked with treating it.

It's my belief that anybody can enjoy The Flame Broiled Doctor. Anyone that works in health care will appreciate the war stories, both comic and tragic. Young people thinking about a career in medicine will get an accurate and authentic feel for the ups, the downs, and the headaches of the job. And people who've encountered doctors and the health care system - and who hasn't - will learn what it's like on the other side of the stethoscope.

Holiday Bliss?

No new posts coming for the next week or two...the joys of getting the books done for the year.
